6 Parasiticides for Ear Mites in Cats

There are six common products that treat ear mites in cats. The medications can be prescribed by your veterinarian, but you'll also find many non-prescription medications. Always use over-the-counter products with care. Don't treat for ear mites without first having your veterinarian ensure ear mites are the root of your cat's ear troubles.

Pyrethrin is the common insecticide found in OTC medications to treat ear mites in cats. You should treat all the pets in your household to prevent the ear mites moving to another host.

1. Acarexx Ear Drops that Treat Ear Mites in Cats

Acarexx is a prescription parasiticide containing ivermectin available from veterinarians. The water-based medication is safe for kittens four weeks or older. Simply squirt the capsule contents into each ear, you don't need to clean the ears first. Adult ear mites are killed instantly. You may need to repeat the dosage in seven days to kill off newly hatched ear mites.

2. Frontline Topical Medication for Fleas, Ticks and Ear Mites

Frontline is a prescription medication containing fipronil and S-methoprene. Fipronil works to kill fleas and ticks currently on your pet, while the S-methoprene impairs reproduction. The topical medication is used for flea and tick prevention, but studies find it is also effective in killing ear mites and preventing them from laying eggs.

3. MilbeMite Otic Solution for Ear Mites in Cats

MilbeMite otic solution comes in tubes that you squeeze into your cats ears. The solution contains milbemycin oxime that impairs nervous system function killing off adult ear mites. Because it works best on mites that are seven to thirty days old, you should repeat the treatment a week after the first dose. You need a prescription for MilbeMite Otic Solution.

4. Otomite Plus Ear Drops

Otomite Plus ear drops use pyrethrin to impair nervous system function of adult ear mites. Use the drops after using an ear cleansing product and wiping the outer ear and base of ear to remove any ear mite residue. Purchase Otomite Plus in many pet stores and some veterinarians also have them available. Squeeze the recommended amount of drops into each ear and rub the base to ensure the liquid goes to the inner ear. Retreat in seven days.

5. Revolution Topical Parasiticide

Revolution is a topical medication used to prevent many parasites, including:

  • Fleas

  • Heartworms

  • Hookworms

  • Roundworms

  • Ticks

Revolution is not specifically designed to kill and prevent ear mites in cats. However, the parasiticide within Revolution impairs the parasites nervous system killing it and stopping the egg-laying cycle. For that reason, it has proven effective in controlling ear mites. The medication is squirted onto the skin between the cat's shoulder blades and soaks into the pores offering complete protection from the listed parasites.
