Antibiotics for Common Dog Infections

Dog infections can stem from a variety of causes. Most infections are purely bacterial, rather than viral, and can be treated accordingly and effectively with the use of antibiotics. Antibiotics are most commonly administered in tablet form; however there are also ointments and sprays available depending upon the infection requiring treatment.

Animax

Animax is an antibiotic ointment that is used to treat infections of the skin that are caused by either bacteria or fungi. Not only does it destroy the bacteria or fungi which has infected the skin, it also has an anti-itch and an anti-inflammatory agent the help alleviate itching and swelling.

Betagen

Betagen is an antibiotic spray which is used to treat lesions of the skin usually caused by hot spots or allergies. It works by inhibiting the ability of bacteria to reproduce and it also contains anti-inflammatory and anti-itch medications. This product is typically used in conjunction with an oral antibiotic if there is concern over the spread of infection.

Cefa-Drops

Cefa-Drops are most commonly used in the treatment of ear, eye, urinary tract, skin and respiratory infections. It is comparable to Ciprofloxacin in that it is used to treat similar infections; although Cefa-Drops are more commonly prescribed. Cefa-Drops are a penicillin based antibiotic and caution should be exercised when using this product if your dog has a sensitivity or allergy to penicillin.

Ciprofloxacin

Ciprofloxacin comes in a few different forms in order to treat specific infections. It is most commonly used for the treatment of ear, eye, urinary tract, skin and respiratory infections. Ciprofloxacin can be given in pill format, liquid format or ointment format depending upon the condition requiring treatment.

The only down fall to Ciprofloxacin is that, over time, some strains of bacteria have developed a resistance to the medication. In that case, a different antibiotic can be prescribed.

Clavamox

Clavamox is an amoxicillin based antibiotic which can be used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. There is no one bacteria that Clavamox is limited to treating. However, Clavamox is most commonly prescribed for the treatment of infections or lesions of the skin.

In addition, it is mainly used in dogs that are sensitive or allergic to penicillin products and it is known for developing very few, if any, side effects.

Vetropolycin

Vetropolycin is an ointment that is most commonly used for the treatment of conjunctivitis or other associated infections of the eye. It contains three main ingredients to fight infection: Bacitracin, Neomycin and Polymyxin.

Bacitracin will effectively treat infections of the eye stemming from Streptococci or Staphylococci infections. Neomycin can be used for treatment of Staphylococci, Ecoli bacteria and certain strains of the flu virus, as well as certain strains of pneumonia. Polymyxin is used for the specific treatment of eye infections which have developed due to a strain of pneumonia.
