Combined Flea and Worm Treatment for Dogs

There are several worm treatment medications that specifically get rid of different types of worms in dogs. However, there are a few drugs that contain ingredients that work on fleas and worms as well. Worms like roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and heartworms cause a lot of problems for your pet. If you administer a monthly preventive medication to your dog that prevents the development of both flea and worm infections, your pet will live a healthy life for many years.

There are three medications that treat both flea and worm infections in pets. These include Revolution, Advantage Multi and Sentinel.

Revolution for Dogs

Revolution not only protects your pet from heartworm infections but it also works on fleas and ear mite infections. It contains the active ingredient selamectin and it’s available in different potencies. Once the medication is administered to your pet, it gets into the bloodstream through the skin and kills adult fleas and ticks. Since the active ingredient selamectin also has anthelmintic properties, it kills adult parasites that are present in the dog’s body.

Revolution is a topical medication that has to be applied to the dog’s skin on the area between the dog’s shoulder blades. Since there are different potencies available, you need to determine your pet’s weight and purchase the box that’s ideal for him.

Side Effects of Revolution

Although Revolution is safe for use on dogs that are more than 6 weeks old, it has to be administered correctly. Make sure the medication doesn’t get into your pet’s eyes, nose or mouth. Some dogs may show signs of sensitivity at the application site.

You should avoid using this product in combination with other flea control or heartworm medications as it can lead to drug interactions and other complications.

Advantage Multi for Dogs

This medication contains a mixture of imidacloprid and moxidectin. It doesn’t treat heartworm infections but it prevents the development of the same. It effectively treats hookworm, roundworm, flea and whipworm infections. Besides this, it also kills ear mites. Due to its effect, this medication requires a prescription.

The product is available in different potencies, namely:

  • Advantage Multi 9
  • Advantage Multi 55
  • Advantage Multi 88
  • Advantage Multi 110

You must also read and follow the instructions that are listed on the package you buy, or discuss the dosage and administration with the vet if you’re in doubt.

Side Effects of Advantage Multi for Dogs

Advantage multi side effects include:

  • Redness and discomfort at the application site
  • Panting
  • Tremors
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Drooling
  • Lack of proper coordination
  • Allergic reactions

Tips for Pet Owners

Wash your hands thoroughly after you apply this medication on your pet’s body. Also dispose of used tubes in the right manner. If your pet develops any of the side effects listed above, you must seek prompt medical care. Also avoid overdosing your pet as this may cause additional side effects.

Sentinel for Dogs

Like Advantage Multi, Sentinel also requires a prescription. It contains two active ingredients namely, Lufenuron and Milbemycin Oxime. While Milbemycin Oxime kills adult hookworms, whipworms and roundworms, Lufenuron acts on flea eggs and destroys the flea life cycle. Milbmycin Oxime is also known to kill heartworm larvae and this prevents heartworm infections in pets.

Sentinel is a monthly medication and it’s available as oral chewable tablets. Since the tablets are beef flavored, they’re highly palatable. Sentinel can also give rise to certain side effects in pets. These side effects include vomiting, loss of appetite and drowsiness.

Even though the medications listed above work effectively on your pet, you must take other precautionary measures to prevent your dog from suffering from parasite or flea infections so that you don’t have to only rely on medications to solve the problem.
