Question:

What are some home remedies for dog arthritis?

Answer:

There are a few things that can be done to help relieve dog arthritis. You can give your pet aspirin. It works just as well in dogs as it does in humans. Always start with a lower dose, say half a pill, and change the dosage as necessary. You can always offer prescription medicine from a vet such as Rymadil, but this should only be given when the symptoms and discomfort become more extreme due to the adverse side effects which include kidney damage. Unfortunately all dogs develop tolerances towards medication so it's best to avoid them if at all possible. You can also add glucosamine and chondroiten in their diet either as a supplement or as included premixed in the food you purchase. This is great for their joints. Finally, while running may be out of the question, maintaining basic exercise is critical such as keeping up regular walks.

Answer:

Keeping your dog's weight down is the best thing you can do to help your dog's arthritis. The less weight they have to put on their joints the better. Keeping them active so their muscle do not deteriorate from lack of use can help the ailment get worse. Glucosamine and Chrondroitin pills are the best over-the-counter remedies. Your vet may also have some stronger medications that can help with the pain.

Answer:

I had a Collie for 15 yrs. and during the last 5 or so years of her life she suffered from arthritis. My vet treated her with Rimadyl. It seemed to help some. I also raised her dishes up off the floor so it was easier for her to eat.
