Dog Bladder Infection Treatment

Bladder infections are also known as cystitis and they're frequent in dogs, especially females, as the bacteria can build up more easily. The infections are due to different bacteria that stack up in the lining of the dog's bladder. Bladder infection treatment may vary according to the severity of the infection, and there are also natural treatments available.

Diagnosing Bladder Infections

A dog affected by bladder infection will display symptoms such as straining to urinate, fever, more frequent urination and possibly blood in the urine. The bladder infection is caused most commonly by the Escherichia Coli bacteria, and can cause severe complications if not detected and treated in a timely manner.

A bladder infection may be diagnosed through a simple urine test or urinalysis. The test will confirm if there are bacteria in the bladder or if there are other factors that cause the symptoms displayed by the dog.

Antibiotic Treatment

The most frequently prescribed treatment for a bladder infection will be antibiotics. There are numerous types of antibiotics that may be prescribed for cystitis, and the vet will select the most suitable ones depending on the type of bacteria causing the infection.

The antibiotics should be administered for two to three weeks and may have side effects including nausea, stomach ulcers, intestinal distress or even kidney dysfunction. Dogs with kidney issues should receive an alternative treatment to avoid the possible side effects.

Zeniquin

The vet may recommend antibacterial treatment for a bladder infection. Zeniquin is the most used antibacterial medication in canines. It's effective in adult dogs, but is not recommended in puppies under the age of 9 months, as it may affect normal growth. Other side effects of Zeniquin may include vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite and lethargy. Zeniquin shouldn't be prescribed for dogs that have an allergy to quinolones.

Naxcel

Naxcel is a sterile powder and can be prescribed for bladder infections. Naxcel contains ceftiofur sodium, which has antibacterial properties. This treatment is only effective in infections caused by the Escherichia Coli or Proteus Mirabilis bacteria.

Homeopathic Treatment

Homeopathic products can bring bladder infection relief and will cause no side effects. The homeopathic treatment may consist of several compounds (mineral, herbal or animal), which will aim at reducing the symptoms and improving the dog's overall health. The remedies will be prescribed according to the attributes of each individual dog. However, there are a few ingredients that are particularly helpful in urinary and bladder issues including Alium Cepa or Berberis Vulg. The homeopathic ingredients will reduce the inflammation of the bladder and will facilitate the elimination of the bacteria.

If the dog experiences painful urination and there is blood in the urine, he may also get an ingredient known as Cantharis. Staphysagris is a homeopathic ingredient that can be used as a tonic.

In addition to treatment, the dog should drink plenty of liquids which will flush out the bacteria. Preferably, the pet should drink only water, which should be clean and fresh.
