Herbal Remedies for Arthritis in Dogs

Herbal remedies for arthritis in dogs are completely natural remedies to reduce pain, inflammation, and discomfort associated with arthritis. As dogs age, they are not as agile and quick as they used to be as young puppies. Joint stiffness, pain, and swelling may occur when arthritis sets in. Arthritis is a fairly common problem in older dogs, and is much more common in larger breeds.

Even so, arthritis can affect any breed of dog, regardless of size or weight. Added weight and poundage associated with the large or giant breeds often puts excessive strain on the bones and joints, causing arthritis to develop. Symptoms of arthritis in dogs can include stiffness, difficulty getting up, and walking slowly.

There are several ways to ease the pain and discomfort of arthritis in dogs, and many of these treatments can be done with natural remedies. Not every treatment or remedy has to involve the use of harsh medication or chemicals. There are several herbal remedies that can be just as effective as other treatments, and can greatly reduce pain, inflammation and joint stiffness in your pet.

Vitamin C for Arthritis in Dogs

Adding large amounts of Vitamin C to your pet's diet can help alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with arthritis. Powdered Vitamin C can be added to your pet's food, and will protect against joint deterioration and will promote healthy tissue within the body. It is best to use sodium ascorbate or buffered Vitamin C, as regular ascorbic acid can cause nausea and stomach upset in many dogs. Consult your veterinarian before giving your pet Vitamin C to make sure the correct dosage amounts are used. Smaller dogs will require less Vitamin C than larger breeds.

It is recommended that pet owners begin with a low dose of Vitamin C, and gradually increase that amount only twice a year. It your pet develops diarrhea or stomach upset, this may indicate that the dose of Vitamin C you are giving your pet is too much.

Aloe Vera for Arthritis in Dogs

Feeding your pet aloe vera juice can help heal arthritis pain, as well as intestinal discomfort, ulcers, and over-acid conditions. Aloe vera juice has been shown to reduce the pain, inflammation, discomfort, and joint stiffness associated with arthritis and joint conditions in dogs.

Alfalfa for Arthritis Pain

Alfalfa is an excellent natural remedy for:

  • allergies
  • arthritis
  • joint stiffness
  • pain

It also boosts the appetite in dogs who are not eating well and is very rich in trace minerals.

Home-Cooked Meals for Dogs with Arthritis

Cooking your pet's food at home can be healthier for your pet, and will provide him with high quality ingredients that are free of chemicals and additives that are not ideal for your pet. It is best to avoid using vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, potato and eggplant, because these types of vegetables are known to worsen the effects of arthritis.
