Diarrhea in puppies can be a serious problem and should be addressed as soon as possible. If problems with disease, parasites, worms, poisoning or foreign objects can be ruled out by your vet, holistic remedies may be the right solution for your puppy. These natural and gentle home treatments are an alternative to traditional medications.
One popular holistic treatment for both humans and pets is slippery elm. This herb, made from a type of tree bark, can calm an upset stomach. When in powder form, it can be mixed with 12 ounces of hot water to form a paste, or sprinkled on your puppy's food. One teaspoon of slippery elm powder is a good general dose for puppies under 20 pounds.
Alternatively, healthy foods are a great remedy for puppies. One to two teaspoons of cottage cheese and yogurts with live cultures will bring balance to digestion. Also try a small amount of shredded cheese and absorbent foods like rice, oatmeal or undercooked pasta to reduce an excess of liquid in the intestines, which can cause diarrhea.
No matter what holistic remedy you choose to combat diarrhea in puppies, always keep plenty of fresh water nearby to prevent dehydration.
