Large Dogs that Don't Shed Much

Large dogs are often notorious for shedding. While it's not necessarily that larger dogs shed more than smaller dogs, their increased size means that they have more hair, and when they shed it can get into more places and seem like it's a much bigger problem. As a result, many pet owners look for breeds of large sized dogs that don't shed their fur or that shed less than normal. This can help to keep a cleaner house and it may also be helpful for people who experience allergies to fur and dander. The following breeds of dogs are large in size and tend to shed very little.

Bouvier des Flandres

The Bouvier is a breed of dog that is medium to large in size and which doesn't shed significantly. These dogs have thick grey or black fur that is curly. They will tend to not shed this fur throughout the house. However, because of the thickness of their fur and the speed at which it grows, they do require frequent grooming. If you choose to groom your Bouvier at home, you may find that the fur that you cut can be found throughout the house. Otherwise, take your pet to a professional grooming service in order to avoid the hassle and the potential mess.

Poodle

The standard poodle is a relatively large dog that doesn't shed. The tightly wound hair will stay on your pet's body and will continue to grow without falling out. Like the Bouvier above, a poodle requires frequent grooming in order to prevent matted hair and other potential difficulties with hygiene and appearance. This can be done at home or, more commonly, at a professional grooming service.

Portuguese Water Dog

The Portuguese water dog is a large sized dog that doesn't shed at all. This animal is relatively rare, making it difficult to come by and expensive. However, their unique and charming appearance, easy to manage fur and friendly personalities make Portuguese water dogs a traditional favorite animal.

Giant Schnauzer

The giant schnauzer is a German breed of dog that was developed for labor purposes. The schnauzer is friendly and intelligent and can be trained easily. It also doesn't shed its fur in a typical situation. You may find a few hairs around the home, but in comparison with most other dogs, schnauzers will not shed a significant amount.

Bearded Collie

The bearded collie is a type of large dog that was developed and bred first in Scotland. This dog is famous for being one of the most intelligent and highly trainable dogs. It is also known for shedding very little fur in most climates and conditions.

For more information about these and other dogs that don't shed very much, consult with a veterinarian. Regular grooming and brushing can help to eliminate shedding in all dogs, regardless of their breed or size.
