Veterinarians generally prescribe Meloxicam for dogs as a painkiller. It is common in dogs with arthritis or cancer, and for treating post surgery pain. Meloxicam has a number of very serious side effects, though it can be safely and effectively used with caution and careful dosage.
Meloxicam is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) in the family of Ibuprofen, Naproxen and Aspirin. As a result, it carries the same following side effects:
NSAIDs decrease the blood supply to the kidney, which could possibly cause kidney failure in certain at-risk dogs.

Meloxicam should be discontinued and your pet brought to the veterinarian if any of these side effects are noted.
Meloxicam should not be used with dogs that are diagnosed with borderline kidney function as it may induce renal failure. Likewise it should be avoided in dogs with liver or heart problems, or dogs with GI ulcers. It should also not be used in pregnant or nursing animals, as well as puppies under six months of age. Dogs taking Meloxicam should stay well hydrated.
Meloxicam is a painkiller that is known to work well in dogs with pain resulting from arthritis, cancer and surgery. When used with care it can effectively eliminate this pain.
