Natural Mange Treatment for Dogs

Mange treatment depends on the type of mange infection present in dogs. Canines are susceptible to skin conditions due to fleas, ticks and mite infestations. Although there are several natural remedies to treat mange, it's necessary to first identify the severity of infection before administering a treatment option to pets.

Types of Dog Mange

The two types of dog mange are Demodectic and Sarcoptic mange. The mange differs due to the type of mite that infects the pet. Demodectic mange is caused by mites known as demodex canis that commonly infects puppies 3 to 12 weeks old. Sarcoptic mange is caused by mites called sarcoptes scabiei canis and can be passed on to other pets.

Pet owners may be able to detect dog mange if they notice dogs constantly itching or scratching their skin. Although the skin condition causes excessive discomfort, it can be easily treated with prescribed medication. Several pet owners also use home- made remedies to keep dog mange at bay.

Treatment of Dog Mange

The most common medication used to treat dog mange is ivermectin. Although ivermectin effectively treats both demodectic and sarcoptic mange, it cannot be used in pets that have a known sensitivity to the drug. Dogs that are sensitive to ivermectin may be prescribed selamectin as it's safe for use on pets suffering from sarcoptic mange. Two other known drugs that cure dog mange are moxidectin and milbemycin oxime. Pet's that have localized mange may also be prescribed sulfur dips along with medicated shampoos for relief from itching.

Home Treatment for Dog Mange

Several pet owners prefer not to use chemical components on their pets due to the side effects of the drugs. Pet treatment includes a diet plan, vitamin supplements and natural or herbal solutions that soothe skin conditions like mange. Pets should be fed diets that consist of high quality food and sources of leafy vegetables such as broccoli and watercress. Dietary supplements also effectively cure dog mange as they contain components that maintain healthy skin and coat. Vitamins include Vitamin E, C and fish oil. Apart from fish oil, sources that contain omega3 fatty acids like pumpkin seed and flaxseed oil should be included in pet food, to improve mange and related skin conditions.

Home-Made Solutions

A known home treatment for dog mange is a solution made of 2 tablespoons of borax per 500cc of 1 percent hydrogen peroxide solution. The solution should be applied to affected areas and then washed with water. Saturated solutions can be made by dissolving a lot of borax in a pail of water until it becomes a precipitate. Saturated solutions can be used to dip pets so that the solution destroys the eggs that cause the infection. A less toxic form of borax is sodium perborate that can also be used to make home solutions for mange treatment.

Homoeopathic Medicines Used to Treat Dog Mange

  • Silicea
  • Sulphur
  • Psorinum

Pet owners should use home remedies only after determining the type of mange infection and it's severity during a vet check. It's also important to remember that certain prescription medication used to treat mange may not be recommended for use in combination with other drugs or home remedies.
