People are always careful when administering pet heartworm medicine to their pets. But no matter how careful we are, mistakes happen. Sometimes pet owners forget they've given the monthly dose and end up giving a second dose. Sometimes the dog gets into the medication and eats several pills. Some pets are sensitive to heartworm medication. Overdoses of medication can happen.
Dogs and cats exhibit different symptoms when suffering from heartworm medication overdose.
Dogs - Vomiting, diarrhea and lack of coordination
Cats - Disorientation, blindness and tremors
Call the veterinarian. Let them know about the symptoms you are seeing.
Take your pet into the veterinarian, being sure to take the product packaging with you. Depending upon the active ingredient(s) in the heartworm medication, your pet will be treated accordingly.
Mark your calendar for the date of next treatment. Once given, cross out the reminder to let everyone know it's been taken care of. Marking the package with the month or day it is to be given is also an effective way of managing doses.
Pet owners must be careful in both storing and giving heartworm medication in order to prevent problems caused by an overdose. Prevention is important in both fighting heartworms and avoiding overdoses.
