Puppy with Kennel Cough: Prevent the Spread of Infection

Puppy kennel cough is about as contagious among dogs as the common cold is among humans. Here are some things you can do to prevent the spread of infection.

Know the Symptoms

Symptoms of puppy kennel cough include:

  • Fever
  • Lethargy
  • A harsh, dry cough
  • Lack of appetite
  • Yellow or green discharge from the eyes and nose

Ease the Symptoms

Kennel cough cannot be cured, but it will run its course in your puppy. Keep your puppy warm and dry while he recovers from kennel cough; a humidifier can help ease the dry coughing. Gently wipe any discharge from your puppy's eyes and nose periodically.

Prevent the Spread of Kennel Cough

There are vaccinations against puppy kennel cough, but, since the virus is constantly mutating, a vaccine may not protect your puppy. If your puppy becomes sick with kennel cough, prevent the spread of the disease by keeping him isolated from other dogs. Though it's unlikely that puppy kennel cough could spread to healthy humans, it's a good idea to keep your puppy isolated from sick family members as well.

If possible, remove any other dogs from your home until your puppy recovers from kennel cough. The disease should run its course in one to two weeks.
