Recognizing Kidney Problems in Your Dog

Chronic kidney problems in dogs usually appears gradually with subtle clues. But severe kidney failure can happen rapidly.

Know all the signs of renal problems so you can help your dog fast. The earliest sign of kidney disease is incontinence, but that's not all. Watch for:

  • Decreased appetite
  • Increased thirst
  • Urinating more frequently; accidents
  • Problems urinating
  • Pale colored urine
  • Diarrhea
  • Strong odors; if your dog has a very bad smell
  • Poor quality coat
  • Depression
  • Serious vomiting
  • Nausea that lasts for a few days
  • Fluid build up leading to an enlarged abdomen

In some cases, kidney problems in dogs progresses to uremia, which is blood poisoning. Check for the following:

  • Low energy
  • Frequent Vomiting
  • No appetite
  • Mouth swelling
  • Sours or abscesses in the mouth
  • Swelling of the limbs
  • Lack of coordination

Be aware of the causes of kidney failure so you can prevent it from occurring and be on high alert to its signs.

  • Licking a toxic substance like antifreeze
  • Certain anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Some forms of antibiotics
  • Infections can cause dogs to have kidney problems
