Side Effects of Popular Flea Treatements

Popular pet flea treatments include both oral and topical applications. A typical topical flea treatment can be applied on the surface of the skin of the animal. The effect of the application can last for a month. Some popular topical flea treatments are Bio Spot for dogs, K9 Advantix for dogs and Frontline Plus. These products contain an ingredient that prevents the development of flea eggs and larvae. Some of these applications are water resistant, which allows the dogs to have bath or swim in water.

Oral flea treatments include products such as Program, which is a monthly pill that affects the flea life cycle and prevents flea eggs and larvae from multiplying. Program is given once a month and can be combined with other products for better protection. Capstar is a quick solution to kill adult fleas within 30 minutes. However, the effect lasts only for 24 hours and must be taken regularly for better results.

Other Flea Treatments

Shampoos, dips and sprays are other products for preventing fleas. However, they are almost impractical to apply during cold weather conditions and also do not offer long lasting protection to pets. Topical and oral pet flea treatments are comparatively safer than the regular shampoos, dips and sprays. They are easy to apply, and the effect lasts for a month.

Common Side Effects of Popular Flea Treatments

Pets often experience temporary irritations after the use of medications. Some common side effects are as follows:

  • Wet patch of fur is a common sign seen when the treatment is with a topical medicine. The patch or fur around the area of application appears to be wet for several hours.
  • Hair loss is another common side effect that is observed in pets. There is a considerable hair loss or hair thinning around the area of application.
  • Skin irritation such as itchiness and redness of the skin at the site of application is often observed. However, some pets try to scratch at the area of application and spread the medication to other areas including face and eyes. This can be dangerous and requires medical attention.
  • Loss of appetite is common among animals that lick the irritated application spot. By doing so, the animal ingests some of the medication that leads to stomach upset and loss of appetite.
  • Animals experience excess salivation and uncontrollable drooling if they accidentally ingest the topical medication.
  • Other uncommon symptoms include neurological and psychological effects, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory problems, seizures and trembling, and allergic reactions.
  • If these signs persist, it is recommended to seek veterinary assistance.

Tips to Prevent Side Effects

Use flea control products only on the particular animal specified in the product label. Follow other prohibitions that are mentioned on the label. Ensure to apply only the prescribed amount indicated on the basis of the size of the animal being treated.

Home Flea Treatments

Vacuuming and steaming the carpets, pet bedding, cushioned furniture, and cracks on floors can prevent breeding of fleas. If the flea infestation is severe, it is advised to replace the old pet bedding with fresh, clean material. Flea combs are also effective in suppressing the growth of adult fleas.
