Coconut oil for dogs can be used both internally and externally and may have multiple benefits for the pets. It is important to obtain organic coconut oil that is undiluted, which is the most effective in canines.
When used as a food supplement, coconut oil can improve the dog’s appetite and help underweight canines gain some weight. There are also added benefits to the coconut oil used as a food supplement:
You should administer 2 to 5 drops of undiluted coconut oil with your pet’s meals. If your dog doesn’t like to taste or the smell of the oil, you can use a syringe and try administering the oil directly in the dog’s mouth.
The coconut oil may also be used externally and is known to reduce dry skin and dander in your pet. The coconut oil should be used in a small amount, no more than 5 ml at a time. Use a cotton pad to apply the oil in the problem areas of the skin or on the entire body of your pet. The coconut oil treatment is also known to reduce skin allergies and hot spots. After using the oil, pad the pet with a dry towel, to make sure that the dog won’t leave oil stains on your carpet or furniture.
When applied externally, the coconut oil will give a pleasant smell to the dog’s coat and skin.
When you choose the coconut oil to use in your pet, make sure it is virgin, untreated, undiluted and organic coconut oil. This may be found in various heath food stores and possibly in some pet shops as well. You may also find certain supplements that contain coconut oil. You can choose these, but check with your vet first, to make sure that the rest of the ingredients are recommended to your pet.
