Dog anal smell?

We have a dachshund age 1 year. when he lays with us, we notice an awful smell and liquid that comes from his anal area. it comes out, without notice from the dog or us until the smell hits. there is no gland swelling that we can see. the liquid seems to be clear. what could this be and what can be done for it?

Anal glands are blind-ended sacs that exist inside the rectal opening at the approximate 4 and 8 o'clock positions. They create a smelly secretion that often has a fish-like odor. When a dog defecates, the glands should contract and this smelly liquid should be expressed and mixed in with the fecal matter. The formation of a firmer stool helps initiate the glands to contract and secrete their fluid when a pet defecates. Look at your dog's feces to see if your pet is experiencing loose stool or diarrhea. If so, adding fiber to your pet's diet may help prevent the glands from getting full and periodically leaking. This can be done by mixing in a small amount (approximately a teaspoon) of canned pumpkin in with the dog food at each meal. Some dogs will express their anal glands when they are scared or anxious without defecation. If this is the case, behavior modification techniques and sometimes medication can help calm the pet and decrease the incidences of anal gland leakage.

  • Normal to have a lump on the outer thigh after having dog's anal glands expressed? (0 answers)

I have a 5 year old JRT. I took her in less than a month ago to get up to date on all her shots (lyme series, heart worm test, bortella and she was dewormed) Last week I took my dog to have her anal glands secreted since they were full. Today I came home from work and she has a large lump (about the size of a grape) on the outer layer of her thigh. She is acting normal, and does not seem to bother her when you touch it. Should I take her in right away or wait a few days to see if she gets better.

  • Home treatment for dog with cyst, cannot afford surgery now (0 answers)

My bull mastiff has a cyst on his back that has started weeping watery blood, not huge amounts but I need to clean it daily. • How can you tell if a dog is in pain? (0 answers)

I have a 13 yr old Rotty. He doesn't move as well as he used to but I cant tell if he has any joint pain. I rub all over him and he loves it, but doesn't yelp or anything else when I rub his hips or legs. The one thing he does though is pants all the time inside or out. I have heard that if a dog pants while inside at rest he may be in pain or discomfort. Is this true? and how can I tell for sure? Thank you

  • Does slightly elevated cat calcium levels return back to normal on its own? (0 answers)

Hi, I have two orange tabby cats both 2 yrs old. I recently took them to the Vet because one of them keeps vomiting undigested food. However, I have an assumption of who it may be as she loves food and eats way too fast. The Vet did some blood work and everything look great except he just wanted to retest one of my cats calcium as it was SLIGHTLY elevated. He told me he is 90% sure when it is retested that it will go back to normal range as he sees this a lot. Is this true? Should I be worried?

  • What should I do with a dog wound that won't stop bleeding? (0 answers)

I took my dog to the vet after she was injured. We don't know how she was injured but she has an open wound about size of dime but 1 to 2 inches deep that hasn't stopped bleeding in almost a week. The vet has seen her twice and neither time did they try to stop the bleeding or bandage it. They told me not to wash it or bandage, and gave me panalog cream but said don't use neosporin. One day I saw larva crawling in her wound and picked them all out with tweezers. What should I do?

  • Where can I find treatments for my dog after cancer surgery? (0 answers)

I found my dog wandering the streets five years ago near a grade school. At the time I was concerned for the safety of the children so I got out of the car and distracted the dog while the children crossed the street. Sabrina waged her tail and licked me and as I opened the car door she ran in to the back of the car and as I was driving she licked my face and the rest is history. Please help us her skin cancer will be removed but I don't know any place in CA for treatments.

  • dog boarded a week at veterinarian, returns home with a cough? (0 answers)

The 16yr-old corgi dog has been in spectacular health and this is his vet's normal boarding area. He came home with a dry hacking cough and cannot bark anymore after spending a week there. He had vaccinations in April and bordetella was among them. My daughter was taken to the back to claim him and remarked that it was nasty and she would never take him there again. Please advise on how to handle this situation. He no longer barks and seems unhappy and I am worried because of his age.

  • Can cats with herpes spread from infected one to resident older cats? (0 answers)

Herpes spread from kitten to resident 7-yr old cats/brothers? Our 14 week old kitten just finished 10 days of Clavamox and he does not show any symptoms except he does sneeze occasionally now, which is less than he did prior to treatment. He is very healthy appearing and is demonstrating normal kitten energy. We have two older cats (7 years old and brothers) and I am concerned about how the kitten could potentially affect their health and lifespan. From what I've read it seems many cats have this condition (herpes) and it does not seem indicated to isolate the affected kitten from the non-affected Kittens/Cats. Is this a safe assumption? The one 7 year old cat has sneezed off and on throughout his life and I never thought or knew it could be herpes as he does not have eye or nasal drainage that I've seen. Please advise. Thank you.

  • Heat related dog seizure? (0 answers)

My Golden had a heat-related seizure yesterday last year; legs splaying, thrashing about, unable to stand. This lasted about 30 minutes and we were finally able to calm him down. Ever since, we have tried to be careful when we play with him which is every afternoon. He insists. Yesterday, he had another seizure. We had played ball for a while and taken a 30 minute break. When we resumed, we only threw the ball twice before the seizure ocurred. He was indoors between the play sessions in the A/C. Do you think the transition between the air-conditioned house and the hot/humid outdoors contributed to the seizure? Would we be better off cooling-off/resting outdoors so he stays acclimated to the environment? He really lives for the play time but I can't bear to watch him go through the seizures or worse, watch him die from them.
