What Is a Normal Feline Urination Frequency?

There are many things to keep an eye out on when it comes to your pet's health, and feline urination is no exception.

Normal Amounts of Feline Urination

How often your cat should urinate depends on several factors, such as how much they drink throughout the course of their day or if they are on a dry cat food or wet cat food only diet. For a general range, though, your cat should urinate between three to five times a day.

Since there are so many factors that can cause the amount of urination to vary, it is a good idea to keep an idea on your cat to figure out what its normal routine is. Once you have this down, it will be much easier to figure out when your cat is going less or more than usual.

Less Than Usual

  • Known as oliguria, there are a few causes for this, including:
  • Kidney failure
  • Urinary blockage
  • Dehydration

More Than Usual

Known as feline polyuria, there are a few causes for this, including:

  • A medication your cat may be taking
  • Physiological problems
  • Diseases
  • Diabetes

No Urine at All

Known as anuria, this is an incredibly serious situation and there are a few causes for this, including:

  • Kidney failure
  • Blockage in the bladder
  • Blockage in the urinary tract
  • Ruptured bladder

Color

The color of your cat's urine is also something that is important to watch out for, as it can give you clues that there is something serious afoot. A healthy color for cat's urine is to be amber or yellow.

  • Green, Dark brown, Yellowish-brown or with foam. This is often the sign that your cat is suffering from some sort of liver problem.
  • Brown, dark red or cloudy. This means that there is blood in your cat's urine.
  • Other colors. This could be the result of any medication that your cat may be taking.

Smell

Smell is something else you will want to watch out for when it comes to your cat's urine habits. If your cat's urine smells like paint or has a sweet odor to it, this may indicate that your cat is suffering from diabetes. If your cat has a strong smell of ammonia when it urinates, then this could be caused by a bacterial infection

Treatment for Abnormal Urination in Cats

Treatment for an abnormal amount of urine from your feline will depend upon what is causing the difference. It is important that, if you notice any of these changes in your cat's urine habits, that you contact your pet professional so that urine tests can be run. Especially in the case of possible blockages, as these can be fatal in a very short period of time.

Preventing Urinary Cat problems

There are several ways that you can help prevent your cat from having urinary problems:

  • Make certain that your cat always has clean, fresh water
  • Limit or eliminate all of the dry food in your cat's diet
  • Keep your cats as active as possible
  • Do your best to keep your cat's stress level as low as possible
