Tablet forms of these four different medications also treat tooth infections and respiratory infections. The proper tablet amoxicillin dosage is five to ten milligrams per pound of body weight.

Most amoxicillin medications require the dog to take the medication twice a day. This will depend on the size, age and weight of your dog. Clavamox, a prescription medication that blends amoxicillin with Clavulanic acid comes it a variety of strengths, so some veterinarians will prescribe a once-a-day dosage.

Side Effects of the Common Antibiotic for Dogs

Amoxicillin is typically safe in dogs of all ages. However, a dog with allergies to penicillin should not take amoxicillin. Pet owners must understand common side effects as well as those that require medical attention.

Common side effects of amoxicillin for dogs include diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain and vomiting. If there is blood in the vomit or diarrhea, contact your veterinarian. Other serious side effects include shortness of breath, hives and seizures.
