Treating Canine Constipation With Bisacodyl

It is important to determine the cause of any canine constipation problems. Constipation in dogs can be the result of an electrolyte imbalance (especially in an older dog), a metabolic problem (kidney failure) or due to an obstruction (an object swallowed accidentally or enlarged prostate gland).

Trauma such as being hit by a car may be the cause of constipation years after the incident occurred. A pelvic fracture can heal without surgery but can narrow the area where stools must pass. If the cause of constipation is not readily ascertained, then lab work and x-rays may be necessary.

Canine Constipation Symptoms

Straining unproductively can be a symptom of constipation, diarrhea or difficulty in urinating, in which case a visit to the veterinarian is to be immediate. A lot of pushing is involved with constipation and there can be small amounts of gooey, mucous or even bloodied stool being passed.

Canine Constipation Remedy

Bisacodyl is a medication used to increase the normal motility (contractile strength) of the large intestine. It works by stimulating the pelvic nerves to increase colon motility. This is not to be used for an extended length of time. A veterinarian should be consulted with any constipation that lasts longer than 1 to 2 days after treatment.
