How to Keep Your Cat from Playing with Dangerous Objects

Cat playing may be dangerous, because cats are curious animals and like to explore everything in your home. Fighting, scratching your furniture, chewing or running around the house are all considered playing by your cat. Cats can get electrocuted, cut themselves or suffer various injuries. Preventing your cat from stumbling on dangerous objects is important for your cat's health and well-being.

1. Hide Dangerous Objects

The best way to prevent your cat from playing with dangerous objects is to hide them. If your cat is not tempted by dangerous objects, he will make do with toys or cardboard boxes. You may cover your cables and wires to prevent chewing, and hide any sharp objects from the cat's sight. Bags may be dangerous, as cats may get suffocated. Hide these in places your cat doesn't have access to. You may lock these in a room.

2. Alternatives to Keep Your Cat Away

If you cannot hide certain dangerous objects, you can use double-sided tape to prevent your cat from coming near the area. Cats don't like stepping on sticky things, so the tape will keep them away.

Another way to keep your cat away from dangerous objects is to spray these with bitter scented aromas. Bitter lemon or apple scents are recommended. Cats don't like these and they will not even approach objects that have a bitter smell.

3. Play and Exercise

A cat that doesn't have the right amount of exercise will find imaginative ways of consuming his energy. Playing with dangerous objects is one way. To avoid possible accidents, make sure your cat gets a lot of exercise. Play with a ball, throw around some toys to make him tired. If you don't, your cat will get bored and explore for any interesting (and potentially dangerous) objects.

4. Toys to Keep Your Cat Busy

Give your cat a lot of toys to play with. Make sure your cat has a wide range of toys: chew toys, soft toys and hard toys. This way, he will be busy playing and won't look for dangerous objects to experiment playing with. Cats get bored easily, especially when you are not at home and they are tempted to play with everything they find. To divert your cat's attention you can also leave boxes or construct a cardboard tunnel, so that your cat has enough challenges for the day. Ensure that all the toys are safe; get the toys form a pet store.

You can't stop a cat from playing as cats need to play. However you can help him play with safe objects. Making sure your cat gets a lot of exercise and giving him toys will ensure that your cat is safe.
