Chondroitin Sulfate for Dogs

Chondroitin sulfate is a substance that’s present in several supplements formulated for use in pets suffering from osteoarthritis. Since this condition gets worse if it’s left untreated, most vets recommend the use of supplements that contain glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate to prevent further deterioration of the bones and the joints.

Osteoarthritis in Dogs

Some breeds are genetically predisposed to conditions like osteoarthritis. Such pets find it difficult to perform routine activities like walking, climbing or jumping. They may refuse to play with members of the family and may even become aggressive if the pain is severe. Dogs suffering from arthritis are generally prescribed non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs and a few pain killers.

Although these drugs provide prompt relief from the pain and discomfort that’s present, they shouldn’t be administered for a prolonged period of time because they cause side effects. These side effects can later lead to other health complications.

Administering Supplements to Your Pet

Most joint supplements that contain chondroitin sulfate also contain glucosamine or substances like methyl sulfonyl methane. You will have to administer the supplements for at least 2 months to your pet before you see any signs of recovery. While the supplements work effectively on a few dogs, others may show no signs of improvement. If your dog does benefit from these supplements, you may have to administer them to your dog for life.

These supplements promote joint and cartilage heath. They help to lubricate the joints and keep them supple. Dogs suffering from hip dysplasia, bone fractures, arthritis and other degenerative bone problems may thus benefit from the administration of joint supplements.

Supplements that Contain Chondroitin Sulfate

Chondroitin Sulfate is included in:

  • Cosequin for dogs
  • Super Joint Enhancer
  • Super Joint Omega
  • Dasuquin with MSM

Selecting the Right Product

Since there are several commercially available supplements that promote joint health you should find out from the vet, which one is right for your pet. Make sure you find out what ingredients are present in the product you buy and look for supplements that have ingredients derived from natural sources. Chondroitin is generally found in animal cartilage and it’s best to purchase supplements that contain chrondroitin derived from bovine cartilage.

Although there are no side effects associated with the administration of chondroitin sulfate supplements, you should avoid overdosing the pet as this may cause diarrhea. You should also read and follow the instructions that come with the product you buy.

Tips for Pet Owners

Dogs suffering from conditions like osteoarthritis require additional care. You may have to switch your pet’s diet so that he doesn’t suffer from obesity. Dogs that are obese exert more pressure on their joints and this causes them even more pain and discomfort.

Exercise your pet every day. The exercise routine shouldn’t be strenuous. You can start by taking your dog out on short walks.

If you don’t want to administer anti inflammatory medications to your pet to control the discomfort, you should look for alternate treatment options. Acupuncture and massages are other ways to treat your pet if he’s suffering in pain.
