Colloidal Silver for Dogs

Colloidal silver consists of small particles of silver suspended in a liquid solution. Colloidal silver is taken orally, injected or applied topically to help treat and manage a number of health problems in humans. Proponents of taking colloidal silver for good health say that dogs can enjoy the same benefits from colloidal silver supplements.

History and Benefits of Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver has a long history of use for medicinal purposes. The ancient Romans and Greeks used colloidal silver to keep themselves healthy, and doctors continued to prescribe it to their patients until the early 20th century. Colloidal silver is believed to support healthy by killing bacteria, viruses and fungi within the body. In dogs, it can be used to treat, prevent and manage conditions including:

  • Lyme disease
  • Coughs
  • Viral, bacterial and fungal infections
  • Digestive problems
  • Fevers
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Parasitic infestations
  • Skin conditions

Colloidal silver damages a pathogen's ability to metabolize oxygen. Deprived of oxygen, the fungi, bacteria and viruses die, while the healthy tissue of your dog's body remains unaffected. Your dog's immune system then takes over to eliminate dead pathogens from his body.

Colloidal Silver as an Antibiotic

Because colloidal silver kills disease-causing microbes, it is a powerful antibiotic. Unlike other antibiotics, colloidal silver use does not encourage the development of anti-biotic resistant strains of bacteria. It can be applied topically to wounds, rashes, burns and skin infections, or to treat inflammation and infection of the eyes. Used in appropriate dosages, colloidal silver has no side effects and does not irritate the skin or stomach.

Using Colloidal Silver to Support Your Dog's Health

Some dog owners add colloidal silver to their dog's drinking water to treat general symptoms of illness. Others administer colloidal silver daily to support long term health and prevent infection. If you would like to administer colloidal silver daily to prevent illness, use the following dosages:

  • Small-breed dogs should receive 10 ml daily
  • Medium-sized dogs should receive 15 ml daily
  • Large dogs may receive 20 ml daily

If your dog is showing symptoms of illness, use the following dosage schedules:

  • Small breed dogs should receive 10 ml, twice daily
  • Medium-sized dogs should receive 30 ml, twice daily
  • Large-breed dogs may receive 40 to 50 ml twice daily

If your dog develops skin symptoms, apply colloidal silver to the affected area. You can mix it with corn starch, flour or talcum powder to make an ointment that is easy to apply. Use colloidal silver to clean your dog's wounds. Use it as a toothpaste or oral rinse to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

Use an eyedropper to treat eye infections and inflammation with colloidal silver. You can put colloidal silver into your dog's shampoo or spray it on his bedding to support skin health. Or, you could put it in his bath water.

While colloidal silver is useful for treating dog ailments of all types, it should be used as a supportive therapy. If your dog develops symptoms of illness, see a vet.
