Dog Acne Natural Remedies

Canine acne occurs more frequently on the face, but it can affect other areas of the body as well, which may not be visible due to the coat. Acne natural remedies are available and may be effective in a number of cases, depending on the underlying caused of acne.

Causes of Canine Acne

Canine acne will be formed when the dog's skin is too oily or when the sebaceous glands of the dog are blocked, resulting in an infection. Dogs in their "teenage" years are more affected by acne. However, acne may also be present during pregnancy. The causes of canine acne include:

  • Oily skin, caused by diet
  • Allergies
  • Excessive production of hormones (i.e., hyperthyroidism)
  • Poor grooming habits

Natural Remedies for Dog Acne

If the dog is prone to acne formation, cleaning the skin on a regular basis is highly important. Use lukewarm water and an antibacterial soap, which will help healing the infection. There are also a number of herbs, tinctures and dilutions that can be used to get rid of acne.

Herbal Treatment for Acne

Acne can be eliminated through herbal treatment if it is caused by poor grooming habits, allergies or infections.

Calendula is effective in removing canine acne and should be applied externally. Get a calendula tincture and add 5 drops to 100 ml of water. Get some cotton buds and soak the areas affected by acne using the solution. Use the solution twice per day. Don't use undiluted calendula tincture directly on the dog's skin.

Aloe vera may also be effective in reducing acne, as it is an astringent plant. You may find tinctures, gels or creams that contain aloe vera extracts. Make sure to thoroughly clean the dog's face and other acne affected areas before applying any of these products.

Nettle can be used to reduce irritation and will also make the skin fresh.

Green tea leaves or tea bags may also be applied to soothe the irritated skin.

Herbs that can be administered internally are meant to reduce hormonal activity or to boost the immunity of the dog, having a detoxifying effect. Herbs such as the red clover or burdock root can be efficiently used to reduce acne. Get a red clover essence and add 3 to 5 drops in your pet's food every day.

Dilutions

Dilutions are used in homeopathic medicine and can be used to heal dogs with acne. The dilutions will be established judging by the underlying causes of acne.

Homeopathy uses natural ingredients to prepare these dilutions, which will be administered on a daily basis. Homeopathic acne treatments may include dilutions of Hepar sulph, which is an anti-inflammatory tonic solution or Silicea, which is effective in restoring the skin's health and make the immune system more resistant.

Natural remedies are helpful and may give good results in many dogs with acne. In any case, the underlying condition should be detected and treated, otherwise the dog will experience frequent acne flare-ups.
