How Anemia in Dogs Can Develop

Anemia in dogs is a symptom of illness rather than an illness itself. Anemia in dogs is defined as a low red blood cell count and can have many causes.

Causes of Anemia in Dogs

Anemia in dogs could occur as the result of blood loss related to injury. Anemia could occur in dogs as the result of an auto-immune disease, or as the result of low blood iron, birth defects, drug reactions, or chronic illness.

Other causes of anemia in dogs include infectionious illness, poisoning, and some inflammatory diseases.

There are many types and causes of anemia. Anemia can develop in dogs of any age, breed, or size.

Symptoms of Anemia in Dogs

Symptoms of anemia in dogs include:

  • Weakness
  • Pale gums
  • Rapid breathing
  • Episodes of collapse
  • Blood in the urine or feces
  • Decreased appetite
  • Yellowing of the skin
  • Distended abdomen
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss

Diagnosis and Treatment

A range of tests may be needed for your vet to make a diagnosis; he'll need to diagnose not only the anemia but the underlying cause. Treatment can be more or less intensive depending on the cause of your dog's anemia.
