Dog Depression After Surgery

Dogs can undergo different types of surgery, the most common being the neutering procedure. Dog depression after surgery can be frequently met, due to the pain and trauma caused by the operation. Depression after surgery may not be preventable, but it can be dealt with.

Depression after Surgery

After a surgery a dog can be lethargic, due to the anesthetic. After it wears off, the dog may be in great pain and this can cause depression. The depression may also be due to a chemical imbalance caused by the administration of different drugs, mixed with the anesthetic and other possible fluids administered before or during the procedure.

Pain killers may be prescribed if the vet believes the pain after surgery requires medication. The effect of the painkillers may also include more hours of sleep, as analgesic medications can have a sedative effect. This may often be mistaken for depression.

Even after the pain subsides the dog may be depressed due to trauma and pain. However, the condition of the dog should improve as his surgery wounds heal and the dog gets back to his normal routine. If the depression persists, there are a few ways to deal with this condition.

Post Surgery Care

To be able to handle post surgery depression and reduce the discomfort, you need to spend more time with your pet and take good care of him. Change the dressings of the wounds and follow the vet's instructions.

Provide a comfortable environment, warm blankets, food and fresh water. Don't force-feed your pet as he may lack appetite after a surgery. Allow him to get food when he needs it. However, if the dog doesn't eat for more than 48 hours, you should get veterinary help. You should know that the recovery may be slow, depending on the type of surgery and the capacity of the dog to heal. Your dog may be incapacitated and may not be able to perform certain movements, so you need to offer help. Post surgery infections may occur, so the vet may prescribe antibiotics to prevent this. Meanwhile, the immune system should also receive support, as it plays an important role in healing.

Dealing with Post Surgery Depression

Post surgery depression can be a temporary condition, but in some dogs, it may last longer. Depression can be controlled with therapy, native remedies or medication treatment.

Pheromone therapy or aromatherapy is a great way to relieve stress and depression in dogs. The smell of pheromones will remind the dog of the scent of his mother and his puppyhood and calm him.

Natural remedies such as Echinacea, Chamomile, Calendula or Astragalus membranaceous can tone up the immune system and this will help the dog get over depression faster.

Medication treatment can be used as a last resort option, as antidepressants can have numerous side effects, including behavior changes, liver issues and lethargy.
