Dog Medical Problems That Often Go Undetected

Some dog medical problems are hard to determine if the symptoms appear gradually, or if they are misdiagnosed. To prevent this from happening, take into account the issues common to your dog's breed. Then, closely monitor your dog to spot any warning signs of illness. Here are some dog medical problems you may not normally expect:

Dog Muscle and Back Problems

Dogs can pull their muscles while performing simple exercises like running or playing. Along with that, they can also develop back and spinal problems such as:

  • Bone fractures
  • Cancer of the vertebrae
  • Disk disease/herniated disk
  • Vertebral irregularities and dislocations

Signs of dog back problems:

  • Trouble walking
  • Slow movements
  • Limping
  • Pain
  • Whining when touched

Canine Skin Conditions

The effects of allergies tend to appear through the dog's skin and coat. A dog with an air borne allergy may experience excessive dander, hot spots and scratching. Other times, a dog may have a serious skin disease like mange that goes undetected until his symptoms worsen.

If grooming and medical treatment does not help, the dog skin problem may be due to a food allergy. A special diet can help you isolate the food source. Other times, a veterinary dermatologist is needed to determine the condition.

Dog Flea Allergies

A few flea bites can cause an allergic reaction in some dogs. It may seem like the dog is simply itchy, but if inflammation or bald patches ensue, he may be allergic. Such dog medical problems need to be treated with topical steroids or a round of antibiotics.
