7 Early Signs of Cat Illness

Cats are independent by nature and may not show symptoms of illness until it is in an advanced stage. To help temper this problem, here are some early signs of cat illness that you should be aware of and contact your veterinarian if you observe.

7 Early Signs of Cat Illness

  1. Withdrawal from normal activities - Because cats are not the most social of animals you must pay attention to their normal, daily activities. If your cat is not sitting in her normal afternoon sun spot or she is not searching out her scratching post as she does every evening, she may be getting sick. Cats will also tend to hide when they are ill so look under beds and behind couches.
  2. Irregular bowel movements - As you clean your cat box(es) be sure to look for any runny poop or diarrhea as this is an early indication that your cat may be sick.
  3. Urinating outside of the cat box - This behavior, although not unusual in some male cats, can be an indication of a Urinary Track Infection which needs to be addressed by a veterinarian immediately.
  4. Lack of interest in grooming - Any change in a normal grooming habit should be noted.
  5. Sudden change in diet - An increase or decrease in the amount of food or water that your cat intakes can mean she is in poor health. Be aware of how often you feed and water your cat so you are able to notice any change in eating or drinking behaviors.
  6. Behavioral changes - Most owners know the range of "normal" behavior for their pet. Take notice if your kitten is less playful, your adult cat is withdrawn or suddenly aggressive.
  7. Hacking or coughing - Although this is oftentimes a sign of a simple hairball being passed through a cats system, coughing or hacking can also indicate cat allergens or a bacterial infection.

An attentive cat owner will know when there is a change of behavior or habit. Although it should not be a cause for alarm, take your pet in for a check-up to make certain her symptoms are not a sign of a more serious health issue.
