How Frequently Should Dog Rabies Vaccinations Be Given?

Dog rabies vaccinations are an important aspect of dog health and the best way to prevent the spread of the deadly rabies virus. There is no cure for rabies and prevention is essential to stop the spread of the illness.

Why Are Dog Vaccinations Important?

Core vaccines are a group of shots that a puppy should receive to prevent harmful and potentially fatal illness. These vaccines include canine distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus and rabies. Vaccinations are a crucial step towards developing a healthy immune system for your dog. After a puppy is vaccinated between 3 to 6 months of age booster shots are given throughout the dog's life. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends that core vaccine boosters be administered every 3 years.

How Often Should Rabies Vaccinations Be Given?

Though it differs from state to state, rabies vaccinations are required by law across the United States. A puppy should be vaccinated at 3 to 4 months and then again once the puppy is a year old. At age 2 a three-year rabies vaccination is recommended by many veterinarians. Some states require annual or two-year vaccinations for rabies but there is debate in the veterinary world about how often rabies vaccinations are needed. Pet owners should talk with their veterinarians about setting up the right vaccination schedule for their dog.
