How to Apply a Suppository to a Constipated Dog

If you have a constipated dog that has had difficulty defecating or evacuating his bowels for several days, it's important that you work with your vet in order to be sure that his system maintains regularity. Failing to do so will not only cause him discomfort, but can also lead to a number of unpleasant and potentially harmful health effects as well. There are a number of different ways to help your pet to maintain regular bowel movements. Although it's usually not the preferred go to method for remedying this issue, suppositories can be among the most effective of these methods.

Applying the Suppository

Suppositories are small pills that contain medicines that help to break down compacted fecal matter, therefore making it easier for the patient to pass that matter out through a bowel movement. Because of the nature of the medicines and the substances contained in the suppository casing, the suppository must be directly in contact with that fecal matter. Therefore, in order to apply the suppository to your dog in a proper way, you'll need to insert it rectally.

Many dogs will not respond well to the process of applying a suppository. Therefore, the trickiest part of giving your dog this remedy is keeping him calm and ensuring that he doesn't lash out or bite you or anyone else around. When applying the suppository, it's most helpful to have at least one other person on hand. This person should lay the dog down and sit by his head, giving him continual pets and reassurance through words. This person may also want to give your dog a chew toy or treats to help keep him occupied. You may also want to have a third person present to help hold down your pet's midsection and rear as well, as some dogs will begin to squirm and it may be difficult to effectively insert the suppository.

Items You'll Need

It may be most effective and efficient if you apply a small bit of lubricant to your suppository before you attempt to give it to your dog. This will help to ease any discomfort that he may feel as you apply the suppository. Gently and carefully insert the suppository into your pet's rectum until it is fully inserted. You'll likely want to use protective gloves while doing this for sanitary reasons. Ensure that the suppository will remain in your pet's system so that it can be made to be fully effective, and then be sure to praise your pet adequately and to give him treats or other rewards for his good behavior.

There are other methods of helping to address constipation as well, including changes to diet, additional exercise and water, and much more. Work with your vet for ideas on how to help eliminate chronic constipation in your pet through behavioral and lifestyle changes as well as with the use of medicines like suppositories.
