How to Remove Pet Allergens in the Home

Pet allergens may vary, ranging from seasonal pollens to household chemicals. Certain allergens may be easy to remove, while others cannot be effectively dealt with. However, if your pet has allergies, you will need to remove the allergens as much as possible.

Isolate the Allergens

The allergens that irritate your pet should be identified and isolated. A blood test can detect if the pet has any antibodies in the blood, produced if there is an allergic reaction. An intradermal testing can also be used to find the allergen. If the allergen is a product in your home, this should be removed or replaced with a product your pet tolerates. Some pet allergens such as dust mites or pollens may be more difficult to remove, but may be minimized.

A Locked Closet

A locked closet is the solution for depositing the allergens that irritate your pet. Gather all the household chemicals that may be the cause of allergies. If the vet detects a single substance that is causing allergies in your pet, you will have to read the labels of all the products you have and deposit the ones that contain that certain allergen in the special closet. The closet should be locked, so that the pet will not be able to accidentally stumble on the culprit products.

Air Purifiers

Air purifiers are the solution to reduce the amount of pollens and dust mites from your pet's environment. These allergens cannot be removed from your home, but they can be minimized, so that they cause fewer allergic reactions. Use air purifiers in all rooms the pet spends time in.

Regular Cleaning

You can remove pet allergens by keeping your house clean. The furniture, carpets and drapes can gather a lot of dust mites, pollens or other airborne allergens and if not thoroughly removed, your pet will be affected by allergies while spending time indoors. Vacuuming can remove more than 70 percent of allergens, but it must be performed so that it covers all corners of the house. Vacuum all carpets, couches, pillows and other areas where the allergens can gather.

Anti-static sprays or cleaning powders can be used when cleaning the home. These will prevent the dust from gathering on the furniture or carpets. However, you need to make sure your pet is not allergic to the cleaning products you use. Many chemicals can cause allergies in dogs. To keep your dog safe, you may keep him away from the cleaned areas for three or four hours, or until the chemicals evaporate and are no longer able to cause allergies.

There are also a number of proteins that can be present in the environment that could cause allergic reactions in your pet. To remove these proteins, you can use bleach, but make sure your dog doesn't inhale the bleach vapors. Alternatively, you may use vinegar, which is less likely to cause allergies and has also a great cleaning power.
