How to Stop Vomiting in Dogs

Vomiting in canines can be acute or chronic. There are a few methods to stop vomiting in dogs. Special care should be taken with the dog's diet, and at-home remedies are available. Even if the vomiting is stopped, the dog should be taken to the vet to determine the cause. In most cases, the vomiting will only signal gastric distress, but there may also be a serious disease causing the vomiting.

Diet Changes

A dog that is vomiting should eat less. You should administer only half of the dog's normal daily portion. You may also consider switching to a special food which contains more fibers. Some vets may recommend fasting, if the vomiting is severe. Remove chew toys, treats and other human foods the dog may have access to. You should control what your dog eats. Make sure your pet drinks enough water, because the dog can become dehydrated through vomiting.

Keep Your Dog in a Cool Place

The dog needs to stay in a cool place, especially if it is hot outside. This will prevent dehydration and stop the vomiting. The dog should be calmed down and taken for short walks. Ideally, your pet should avoid interaction with other pets, as he may be carrying a virus. The interaction with other pets may also make the pet agitated, which can intensify the vomiting.

Ice

Ice can be beneficial for dogs that vomit. Give a few ice cubes to your dog and see if he swallows them. The ice should calm down the stomach and provide the necessary hydration if the dog refuses to drink water.

Fiber Supplementation

The supplementation of fibers can reduce gastric distress. Feed rice or canned pumpkin to your dog. Some dogs may refuse to eat, so you will have to look for different remedies.

Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic remedies can be applied in dogs that experience vomiting. Administer one tablet of Nux vomica once per day until the dog no longer vomits.

Natural Remedies

There are some natural remedies that can stop vomiting. Administer ginger or ginger tea. If the dog refuses to eat, you may use a ginger tincture in the dog's water. Chamomile tea can soothe the stomach and can effectively stop vomiting caused by an upset stomach.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture can be used in canines to calm them down or to cure different ailments. Vomiting can be stopped through acupuncture, but this treatment may not work in all dogs. There are a few acupuncture points that will stimulate the metabolism of the dog and will calm him. A point that can be pressed is located in the front part of the back legs, just below the knees.

These methods to stop vomiting in dogs can be all used at home for occasional vomiting, which is normal in dogs. However, if the vomiting becomes chronic, a vet should be consulted, as the dog may be affected by a health problem. The dog will also require liquid therapy, as chronic vomiting causes dehydration.
