Kennel Cough Vaccine Side Effects

The kennel cough vaccine can be an effective and helpful barrier to tracheobronchitis, as kennel cough is sometimes known. While it does not offer 100% protection against the disease, vaccines are one of several steps owners can take to prevent severe kennel cough infections in their puppy or dog.

Kennel Cough Vaccines

Many 5 or 7-way vaccines that vets will often recommend for puppies can help prevent parainfluenza and other infections that tend to complicate kennel cough infections and bring on more severe symptoms.

A vaccine against both parainfluenza and Bordetella bronchiseptica can also be given to puppies to provide a large amount of protection against kennel cough. Side effects of this vaccine can include the appearance of symptoms similar to kennel cough which clear up within a few days, often without treatment. The parainfluenza virus can be spread to other pets for up to 3 or 4 days after vaccination, so keeps your dog isolated from other dogs after the vaccine is administered.

Side Effects of Kennel Cough Vaccines

Possible side effects include swelling at the injection site, lack of appetite, lethargy and low fever, but these are not cause for concern.

Some dogs have allergic reactions or drug interactions with vaccines, so always talk to your vet about any previous reactions to medications or vaccinations. Serious symptoms to watch out for include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Pale gums
  • Increased heart rate
  • Seizures
