Medicated Malaseb Shampoo for Dogs

Medicated Malaseb shampoo is used in the treatment of canine bacterial, fungal and yeast infections.  Most versions of medicated Malaseb shampoo contain miconazole nitrate (2 percent) and chlorhexidine gluconate (2 percent). As the ingredients of this shampoo can also destroy organisms such as Staphylococcus intermedius and Malassezia pachydermatis, the product is also recommended for bacterial or fungal seborrhea. In addition, Malaseb shampoo also proves to be efficient as a treatment for ringworm infections, provided that they are caused by Microsporum canis, M. gypseum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. However, in the case of ringworm infections, it is better to use the shampoo in tandem with other medication.

Benefits of Medicated Malaseb Shampoo

One of the main advantages of the medicated Malaseb shampoo is that it can be used in dogs of all ages for the types of infections mentioned above. Since the shampoo does not contain any artificial dyes or perfumes, the skin infection cannot get worse after using it. The product is able to degrease the skin and remove the damaged skin oils without affecting the coat of your dog.

Availability and Directions of Use

Medicated Malaseb shampoo is available in bottles of either 250 or 500ml that must be kept at room temperature. Containers with greater capacities may also be available, depending on the brand of the shampoo. Keep in mind that the dosage of shampoo must be correlated with the size and the hair length of the dog. For example, 50ml of medicated Malaseb shampoo are sufficient for a dog that weighs 66 pounds and has medium length hair.

At first, clean water should be used for wetting the dog carefully.  The shampoo should not be applied all in one place, but rather in several spots. After applying it, a gentle massage should be done, so that the shampoo covers the entire coat. This can be done easier if a sponge is used. It is highly recommended to apply the shampoo in the following areas:

  • Around the lips
  • Beneath the tail
  • Between the toes

It is particularly important to apply the shampoo in these areas as here is where parasites are usually located. Once medicated Malaseb shampoo covers the entire coat of the dog, it should be left like this for 10 minutes. Clean water is used for rinsing the shampoo off.

Precautions When Using the Medicated Shampoo

Make sure that the dog does not lick his coat while the shampoo is applied, as this may lead to gastrointestinal or respiratory complications. Also, it is important to avoid contact with eyes, in order to avoid irritations. Flushing the eyes with clean water upon contact should resolve the problem. If the irritation persists, a veterinarian must be contacted urgently.

Adverse Reactions to Medicated Malaseb Shampoo

Side effects to this type of shampoo are only observed if the dog is hypersensitive or allergic to one or more of the ingredients. Other than that, the medicated Malaseb shampoo is considered very safe and if the directions of use are respected, there will not be any complications. Special attention needs to be given to the warnings listed above, so that the shampoo does not get in the eyes, mouth or nose.
