Natural Tick Bite Treatment for Dogs

A tick bite may cause an infection in dogs and an allergic reaction in sensitive dogs. A tick bite treatment may contain herb extracts; these ingredients will help maintain the red blood cell count, which may decrease due to the tick bite and the bacteria spread by the tick. The tick saliva may cause negative skin reactions, which can be alleviated with a few natural remedies.

Removing the Tick

The most important thing to prevent a bacterial infection caused by ticks is to remove the tick. The infection is known as the Lyme disease and is caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria.

The tick is dark brown insect that is about the size of a coffee bean and it is visible to the naked eye. Use a pair of surgical gloves for protection, as ticks may infect humans also. Get a pair of tweezers and grab the insect’s head. Pull the tick out, making sure not to crush the body of the insect, as this may spread the bacteria under your dog’s skin.

Check if the insect is intact, it should have a head and a mouth. Use a natural disinfectant containing tea tree oil, which is an effective antiseptic.

In case these are not removed, visit your vet to remove the remaining parts.

Natural Remedies for Tick Bites

The natural remedies for dogs with tick bites should offer immunity support and focus on increasing the red blood cell count and eliminate the toxins. In case your pet has an allergic reaction, this should be also treated.

Milk thistle (Carduus marianus) is a natural liver tonic, as it contains antioxidants that will help in the removal of toxins.

Crotalus hor is another remedy that may be used to boost the red blood cell count.

These natural ingredients may be found in pet stores; they may be used individually, or you may also find formulas that combine all these. These herb extracts may be used as tinctures, applied on the dog’s skin and/or as supplements added to your pet’s food.

Some supplements of iron may also be administered for red blood cell support.

Treating Allergic Reactions to Tick Bites

Should your dog get a skin irritation caused by the saliva of the tick, you need to use licorice root extracts. Apply a few drops on the bite; the licorice root has the same effects as cortisone, but it is all natural. The herb extracts will reduce swelling and redness. You may also give your pet a few drops of licorice root extracts in his food, as this will stimulate the production of corticosteroids, speeding up the healing of the allergic reaction.

Pay attention to any possible symptoms of Lyme disease that may occur in your pet. If the tick is not removed within 24 hours after the bite, it may spread the bacteria and cause an infection that will be signaled by joint swelling, fever, lethargy and swelling of the lymphatic nodes. The infection may be treated with antibiotics or holistic remedies.
