Nebulizers for Dogs

Nebulizers are an effective means of conveying certain types of medicine to your pet. If your dog is suffering from a condition which affects his respiratory tract, you may need to provide him with medicine directly at the source of his condition. In this case, you can use a nebulizer to do so. While veterinarians oftentimes use nebulizers to administer medicines in their offices, you can also make use of this device to provide your pet with certain types of medicine at home as well. Read on for an overview of how nebulizers work and what their benefits are.

Nebulizer Overview

Nebulizers consist of three primary parts. The first is a basin that converts liquids (generally water, with medicine mixed in) into their gaseous states. That mist travels up the second part of the nebulizer, which is a tube, until it reaches the final portion. This is a mask that can be attached to your pet's face. Thus, when he breathes while wearing the nebulizer, he'll directly inhale the mist of the liquid from the basin portion of the nebulizer at the same time.

Using Nebulizers for Dogs

The most common use of a nebulizer in veterinary medicine is for dogs suffering from asthma. In these cases, the nebulizer can help to hydrate your pet's respiratory tract and to deliver oxygen directly into his system to aid in his breathing. These devices can also be used for a variety of other cases as well. For instance, in some cases of fungal or bacterial infection of the respiratory tract, the best way to administer the medicine is through the direct transmission of a mist to your pet's lungs.

Nebulizer Use at Home

Nebulizers that are found in a vet's office are typically somewhat different from those that you might use at home. These home nebulizers tend to be smaller than those at a vet's office. However, they are just as capable of providing your dog with hydration. In many cases, people with pets suffering from chronic respiratory issues (such as asthma) find that it's helpful to have a nebulizer at home. This is because the dog may require frequent administrations with the machine, and it's helpful to be able to provide your pet with treatment more quickly.

Dangers of Nebulizers

When used properly, nebulizers pose no danger to your pet's health at all. The only dangers come about if the substances that you put in the basin of the nebulizer could potentially cause your pet harm. Additionally, many pets will find the mask portion of the device to be uncomfortable, so it may take a while until your dog is completely willing to have the nebulizer attached to his face.

Nebulizers can be a great tool for aiding in your pet's breathing or helping to cure a variety of different diseases that affect his lungs and the remainder of the respiratory tract. Ask your vet for advice on whether one of these devices is appropriate for your dog.
