Pet Med FAQ

Pet meds are necessary when your dog is ill or simply to prevent the occurrence of a disease your pet is likely to be exposed to. Meds can be obtained over the counter (OTC) or through prescription. There are also holistic meds that can be used in pets.

When to Use OTC Medication?

Over the counter medication can be used if you are sure that the pet is affected by a certain illness and the condition is not severe. You can use OTC pet meds for acute vomiting and diarrhea or to relieve coughing. However, if you notice that your pet doesn't respond to the treatment or has more serious symptoms, it is best if you consult a vet for some prescription pet meds, which are stronger and more effective.

Tablets, Injections or Topical Creams?

When it comes to pet meds, these are available in several forms: tablets, injections and topical creams. The vet will determine the best type of meds for your pet. Topical solutions are less effective than pills, and the injections have a faster action than tablets. Typically, injections are administered only if the pet's condition is severe or if the meds need to be given subcutaneously.

What Is the Right Medication Dosage?

You should never establish the dosage for your pet. A vet will calculate the right dosage for your pet, judging by his weight, health condition, age, breed and sex. If you get OTC pet meds, you can ask your pharmacist about dosage. Never change the dosage in your pet or administer the dosage required for humans (if the meds are used in humans also), because you may cause poisoning in your pet. Never use the dosage recommended on websites or by friends or colleagues.

What Are the Signs of Medication Poisoning?

Your pet may get an unsuitable dosage or may accidentally ingest his meds, so you need to be able to read the signs of medication poisoning:

  • Excessive drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Fainting or sudden collapse
  • Confusion

The pet can be saved if taken to the emergency room and the meds are eliminated from his stomach or the blood flow.

Do All Pet Meds Have Side Effects?

All traditional pet meds have side effects, which may be more or less severe in your pet. Your pet may not develop all side effects mentioned on the labels, but may present additional symptoms, especially if he is allergic to any of the compounds of the meds. Holistic meds typically don't have side effects, but should be administered only under supervision.

Can I Give My Pet Human Meds?

Even though certain human meds may be suitable for use in pets (i.e., aspirin), it is safer if you don't use human meds. Opt for meds that are formulated for pets, because human medication may be toxic and may also contain ingredients that the pets cannot assimilate. It is not recommended to give dogs cat medication and vice versa.
