The Recommended Dosage of Amoxicillin for Cats

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic that is commonly used in humans but may also be used in feline veterinary medicine. Cats may get amoxicillin to fight different types of infections, especially of bacterial nature. The recommended dosage of amoxicillin for cats may depend on several factors including the cat’s age, condition and weight.

Recommended Dosage of Amoxicillin in Cats

Felines can get amoxicillin for a wide range of bacterial infections. The vet will asses the cat’s condition and will decide on the right dosage. The dosage of this feline medicine will depend on:

  • The type of infection
  • The severity of the infection, more aggressive infections will get a higher dosage
  • The weight of the cat; for each pound of body weight the cat will require a number of mg; if the dosage is too low, the antibiotics may not be effective; if the dosage is too high, this may be toxic for the cat and may cause severe liver damage
  • The age of the cat; young kittens should get a lower dosage

Note that you should never give your pet amoxicillin without consulting the vet first. Some cats may have an allergy to this medicine, so other antibiotics may be more suitable to cure the infection.
