Stop Barking Dog in Crate

To stop barking dog may be a difficult task, but not impossible. Dogs are animals that feel better in packs and they need to communicate through barking. However, excessive barking might annoy the neighbors and your family. Therefore it is important to teach your dog some rules about barking so that he should know that barking is not allowed. Using the crate to create a comfort zone for your dog might just help you training your dog regarding barking.

Why Do Dogs Bark

Barking is part of the dog’s natural behavior, so you need to train him into not doing something which he would normally do. Dogs bark for various reasons:

  • When they request something
  • Out of boredom and loneliness
  • When scared
  • Fence barking at people or animals they see
  • Alarm barking: when an unknown person approaches the house

Basically dogs bark to communicate something or if they want to obtain something, which is most often food and attention. Make sure you know why your dog is barking before punishing him for doing so.

A good way to prevent your dog from barking is using the crate when you train him. Most owners would like to make sure that their dog doesn’t disturb the entire neighborhood when left alone in the house.

In order to make your dog feel more independent, you would have to provide him with an area of comfort that he should perceive as his own. Therefore the crate is very helpful.

It is important to start the bark training using the crate when your dog is very young. Put your dog in the crate, preferably in another room and leave him there for about half an hour at first and then increase this period. Ignore the dog when he is in the crate and barks to make him understand that this is his space and that you do not respond to his barking. When the confinement to crate period is over, reward your dog with treats and praises. This will reinforce desirable behavior in your dog.

Things Which Help Stop Barking Dog in Crate

You can also give your dog something to do when he is confined in the crate. For instance, you can also put his favorite toy in the crate. This way he can get busy and forget about boredom. You can also leave the radio on, especially if you leave the house. The noise will distract the dog.

Choosing a Dog Crate

Make sure the dog is comfortable in his crate. Otherwise it would be a little more difficult to train him not to bark when in crate. Make sure the crate gives your dog enough room to stand up, lie down and stretch or turn around.

The crate has to be well ventilated and should have a small window so the dog can see outside. Many owners choose the wire crate. Make your dog’s crate a friendly environment and he will grow to like it.
