6 Dog Potty Training Techniques Compared

There are several dog potty training techniques that you can use to house train your newly acquired puppy. Since puppies cannot hold urine in the bladder for a long period of time, they often urinate in places around the house. Most puppies take some time to become potty trained, and you need to be patient and reinforce good behavior as soon as it occurs. You should also follow some of the commonly used potty training techniques to get quick results.

1. Paper Training

In order to use this method to potty train your pet, you will have to place a few papers and pre-treated pads to encourage the puppy to urinate on them. Monitor your pet and quickly place him on the pre-treated pad if you think he is about to urinate.

2. Crate Training

Several pet owners use this method of potty training because it teaches the pet not to urinate inside the home. You must make sure that you take your puppy outdoors before putting him inside the crate and also after letting him out of it. Avoid keeping the pet inside the crate for more than five hours during the day, and give him a few toys to keep him busy.

3. Close Supervision

If you choose not to use the paper training or crate training techniques you will have to closely monitor your pet and take him out as soon as he starts to sniff the floor or walk around in an attempt to urinate. Reinforce good behavior by praising the pet after he urinates outdoors. The puppy should learn that he's being taken outdoors to urinate and not for play or exercise.

4. Discipline

If you catch your puppy urinating inside the house use a firm 'No' to discipline him. Avoid physical punishment because it only scares the pet and confuses him. You should instead reinforce good habits by praising your pet and giving him a treat if he urinates outside.

5. Feeding Schedule

You could also take your pet outside half an hour after he has eaten. Most pets are likely to urinate within 30 minutes after they've consumed food. However, it's best to monitor the pet and take him outdoors often so that he gets trained quickly.

6. Verbal Commands

You should also teach your pet to listen to your commands. In this manner you can tell him to go outside when he wants to urinate. In rare instances, pets might stand at the door when they want to go out. But this behavior is generally seen in adult dogs. Once outdoors you can also use the word 'Potty' a few times so that the dog associates the term 'Potty' with you taking him outdoors.

Comparison of Techniques

While the paper training technique is effective, dogs sometimes learn to urinate inside the house simply because the papers and pads are placed inside the home. You should gradually place these towels and pads closer to the door in order to train the pet. While it's best to closely supervise your pet and avoid confining him in a crate, it's important to keep a crate handy when you wish to leave your pet alone at home for a short while. Dog's don't like urinating on their bedding and will hold their urine until their care takers return. Verbal commands work effectively when used in combination with other techniques.

As a pet owner, you need to be patient when training your pet. You should also use other behavior training techniques to get rid of bad habits.
