Alternative Allergy Solutions for Dogs

Besides the numerous traditional allergy solutions, there are others that are less conventional but may work in alleviating allergic reactions in some dogs. The alternative allergy solutions include herbal remedies, homeopathic remedies, acupuncture, immune system support or stress relief.

Herbal Remedies

Herbal remedies can be used as allergy solutions. There are herbs that are good for topical healing. Some will act internally while others will be good both for internal and external use.

Oatmeal is beneficial for treating allergic skin reactions and can be used in the form of rinses after a bath in lukewarm water. Oat may also be present in the dog's shampoo, which will reduce itchiness. To avoid the chemicals that are present in most commercial dog shampoos, you might want to prepare a shampoo out of oat straws.

Other herbs that are beneficial for external use and relieve itchiness and swelling include yellow dock, burdock root, nettle, aloe vera and calendula.

Other herbs that can be found in the form of drops and can be used as allergy solutions in canines include:

  • Extracts of dandelion, which targets the liver and will have a cleansing effect, which results in a stronger immune system
  • Nettle, which can also be applied internally and will be effective in reducing swelling and symptoms such as sneezing and breathing problems
  • Sarsaparilla can be used internally to boost immunity and reduce skin dryness and flakiness

Allergies in dogs are often treated with synthetic corticosteroids. The corticosteroids are naturally produced in the dog's system and may be stimulated by administering a substance known as glycyrrhizin. The licorice root plant contains glycyrrhizin and there are numerous supplements that can be found and given to dogs that have allergies. Licorice root extract may also be applied externally to reduce irritation and swelling.

Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic remedies will use dilutions that will target the general health of the dog. Each allergic dog may require a different type of homeopathic treatment, depending on the symptoms, the age and other possible health conditions present. Homeopathic remedies may include different animal, mineral or herbal ingredients.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient eastern technique that is utilized in humans, but has been developed for use in pets as well. The treatment will consist of needle insertion in key points that will control other areas of the body. The treatment will focus on strengthening the dog and relieving the allergic reactions.

Immune System Support

The allergies are a disease of the immune system. Offering immune system support should reduce the symptoms of allergies and prevent future negative reactions to different environmental factors. A slight change in the diet and supplementation of vitamins can offer great immune system support.

Stress Relief

Stress is a major cause of a weakened immune system. A dog that is stress free is less likely to have allergies. Stress may be relieved with medication treatment or through other alternative methods.
