Are Maltese Puppies Hypoallergenic?

When purchasing a dog, you may ask yourself whether certain puppies are hypoallergenic, especially if you or someone in your family is known to suffer from pet allergies. Maltese dogs are considered hypoallergenic, as they are small in size and they don’t shed. But before you buy such a puppy, you should know the basics about pet allergies and why you may still experience allergic reactions even in the presence of a hypoallergenic breed such as the Maltese.

The Allergens Produced by Dogs

While many people believe that dog allergies are due to canine hair, the real allergen is a glycoprotein. This glycoprotein is secreted by all dogs and will be found in various concentrations in the dander, saliva and urine. Dander contains the highest amounts of the culprit glycoprotein, so most people will develop allergies to canine dander. Even dogs that have short hair or no hair at all will produce dander and secret the glycoprotein in the saliva and urine.

Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds

There is a list of hypoallergenic dog breeds that are supposed to cause fewer allergic reactions in susceptible people. However, you should know that even these dogs produce dander and shed the glycoprotein in the dander, saliva and urine, so if you are allergic to dogs, you will be allergic to these hypoallergenic dogs as well. These dogs are known to shed less dander and this is why they are considered hypoallergenic. You may notice that your allergic reactions are diminished in the presence of a hypoallergenic dog breed when compared to a regular breed, but not all allergic people experience this.

The list of hypoallergenic dog breeds includes:

  • Bichon Frisé
  • Affenpinscher
  • Cairn Terrier
  • Chinese Crested
  • Border Terrier
  • Yorkshire Terrier
  • Bouvier des Flandres
  • All types of Schnauzers

These dogs don’t shed, have no or shorter hair, are smaller in size or produce a smaller amount of dander. Some of these breeds are recommended by the American Kennel Club for allergy sufferers.

Maltese Dogs

Maltese dogs are included on the list of hypoallergenic dog breeds, as they don’t shed. They are supposed to cause fewer allergic reactions, as they secrete fewer amounts of the glycoprotein, which is known as the main irritant. The toy size may also contribute to a lower amount of shed dander. There are people that have reported to develop allergies to Maltese puppies as well, while others have noticed an improvement of their allergic symptoms when exposed to a hypoallergenic Maltese puppy. If you want to determine whether you are allergic to a Maltese puppy, you should arrange to spend a day in the companionship of such a puppy and see if you have any allergic symptoms. You are more likely to have no or reduced allergic reactions to a Maltese puppy if your symptoms were milder to begin with. However, you may also do a series of things to reduce your allergies including the regular grooming of your pet, the use of air purifiers, improving the dog’s skin condition and getting medication.
