Tylan is a powerful antibiotic that may be used in veterinary medicine to fight a wide range of infections. Tylan contains Tylosin as the main ingredient, and can also be used to treat canine diarrhea and inflammatory diseases.
Diarrhea in dogs may be due to diverse diseases and parasites, including:
Diarrhea may be a normal reaction of the body to get rid of certain toxins. If the condition persists for more than 2 days and there is also mucus or blood in the diarrhea, you need to take your dog to the vet.
Diarrhea may cause dehydration, which can be fatal in weaker dogs and puppies.
Besides the liquid stool, you may also notice a few additional symptoms that may point to a disease:
Tylan is an antibiotic and is efficient in curing infections. It's an antibiotic from the macrolide class (which includes erythromycin) and can be administrated when the dog has diarrhea.
It's efficient in healing diarrhea caused by colitis and intestinal problems. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can act as an irritation reducer in the large intestine.
Tylan is recommended for dogs with kidney problems, as it is eliminated entirely through urine and will not add stress on the kidneys.
The drug is not recommended for diarrhea caused by stress.
Tylosin has a foul taste, so dogs will reject the pills. You may have to hide them in the dog's food or opt for injections or capsules. Make sure your dog takes his drugs.
Tylosin has negligible side effects, and this is why vets recommend it for diarrhea.
In case your dog is allergic to antibiotics such as erythromycin, Tylosin is likely to cause negative reactions.
Tylan may create intestinal problems in sensitive dogs.
The injections of Tylan may cause temporary skin irritations.
Let the vet know that your dog is being treated with the drug if he undergoes testing, because the antibiotics may lead to elevated levels of ALT and SAP (two liver blood tests).
Tylan is not recommended for dogs that are under heart medication, such as choramphenicol or lincosamides.
Being an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication, Tylan may also be used in other infections and can even treat irritable bowel syndrome.
In addition, Tylan may be used for tear staining in dogs with a light colored coat. Tylosin is present in the product known as Angel Eyes, which is recommended for tear staining.
Given that the product contains antibiotics, it may not be recommended for daily use. The daily use of Tylosin as a cosmetic product may lead to a built up immunity to antibiotics from the macrolide group of drugs.
