Why Your Cat Chews on Wires

Cats tend to chew on wires and cords primarily out of boredom. Chewing on wires and cords is quite serious and can result in minor shock or death. When cats are bored, they often look to create toys for themselves especially when left alone for long periods of time.

Tips to prevent wire and cord chewing

Provide plenty of toys for your cat including wall mounted toys that can be batted around, cardboard boxes on the floor to form tunnels to explore, and climbing posts. Be sure to avoid all toys that encourage wire chewing behavior such as balls of string or thread. These types of toys can also cause serious medical issues when ingested.

Flavor and coat cords with a horrible taste by spraying or wiping them with products like Bitter Apple.

Limit access by rearranging your furniture to cover cords and wires. Move objects to block entry behind wall units and desks. Use wireless technology whenever possible.

Unplug all electronic devices and appliances until needed.

Most cats enjoy chewing on grass and if they don't have access to the yard they may see string and wires as something similar. Growing grass from oats or wheat for your cat may prevent the urge to chew on substitutes.
