The management of cat urinary health is the number one reason that cats are taken to the vet. The pH (acidity) level of cat urine has a direct correlation to the health of the feline urinary system.
Range of Healthy PH Level in Cats
The acidic range of a cat's urine may be altered due to a variety of reasons; however, experts concede that a range of 6.0 - 6.5 is healthy
A pH level over 6.5 may cause strutive crystals (comprised mainly of magnesium and phosphorus), to form within the urinary tract. Strutive crystals pose a serious threat to a cat's overall. These crystals have the potential to block the urethra completely, preventing the cat from urinating properly, or at all. A pH level lower the 6.0 can cause the formation of calcium oxalate crystals.
Knowing PH Level Helps Diagnose Possible Urinary Problems
The pH level of feline urine may also help to diagnose FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease), formerly known as FUS (Feline Urinary Syndrome). It can also tell you if your cat is taking in enough water, how well his food is supporting his system, and whether or not the cat's kidneys are functioning properly.
If your cat is seven years of age, or older, request a urinalysis at his annual check up to best monitor the condition of his urinary system.
