Causes of Frequent Vomiting in Dogs

Chronic or frequent vomiting in dogs is typically a sign of some sort of medical condition in your pet. Vomiting taken alone as a single symptom is almost impossible to use as an identifier for the problem that your dog is experiencing. This is because vomiting is one of the most common symptoms for a variety of different conditions, ranging from mild indigestion and other inconsequential problems up to very serious and potentially life threatening diseases and conditions. Therefore, you'll need to be aware of any other symptoms that are occurring at the same time as the chronic vomiting in your dog's system. Read on for a few of the most common causes of frequent vomiting in dogs.

Diet Issues

Whether your dog has eaten non-food items or those that aren't responding well in his stomach or intestinal track, or if he has some sort of an allergy to the food he's eating or if his diet is imbalanced in some way, one of the first mechanisms that his body has to reject food that it doesn't want is to vomit it up. Most often this is the cause of your pet's vomiting when it occurs irregularly. If dietary issues cause frequent and regular vomiting, you'll need to discuss with your veterinarian how to best deal with this problem.

Parasites

Intestinal parasites disrupt the flow of food from your pet's stomach to his intestinal track and out throw his bowels. Different parasites do a variety of things to disrupt this system, but one of the most common responses that your dog can have to a parasitic invasion is frequent vomiting. Check if your pet has diarrhea and other symptoms of gastric distress.

Abdominal Disorders

Pancreatitis, tumors of the stomach and abdomen and other conditions that affect your pet's abdomen may cause him to not be able to keep down any food that he eats. If your pet begins to vomit immediately after he eats and seems to be unable to keep any food in his system, this is one of the common causes of that situation.

Kidney and Liver Troubles

As your pet ages, his kidney and liver lose their functionality. When this occurs, you'll notice that he may become less tolerant of different foods. He may vomit regularly after eating and may vomit yellowish bile up at times after it has been several hours since a meal. These conditions can also arise as a result of other liver and kidney damage too, and need not only apply to older dogs.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

inflammatory bowel disease, otherwise known as IBD, is a common occurrence in dogs. As pets eat items that they're not supposed to and which don't sit well in their systems, they oftentimes develop negative reactions to those foods. They may even damage the stomach and the intestinal track as a result of eating those foods. This chronic condition results when that happens, and pets frequently vomit when this is the case.
