Which Dog Diarrhea Medicine Has Proven Results?

One of the most effective dog diarrhea medicine options is easy to find and safe for all ages. Canned pumpkin is something dogs love and seem to help control mild cases of diarrhea. Diarrhea quickly causes dehydration, especially in puppies, and parasites and bacteria may be the root of the situation.

Try Natural Remedies First

If your vet has ruled out any major issue, canned pumpkin should be the first remedy to try. You can mix it with some rice if desired, but most dogs respond well to canned pumpkin. Make sure you purchase plain canned pumpkin and not the sweetened pie filling.

Canned pumpkin is high in fiber. The fiber gets into the intestines and soaks up water. If the diarrhea is the result of a change to the dog's diet or a stomach bug, the pumpkin will help slow the diarrhea down and help reduce the risk of dehydration.

Over-the-Counter Medicines

Imodium, Pepto-Bismol and Kaopectate-- all over-the-counter remedies for humans-- are safe for dogs if given the proper dosages. Dogs should have 0.05 milligrams per pound of body weight every eight hours. If the dog diarrhea medicine has not cleared up after 48 hours, contact your vet. Also, be aware that Pepto-Bismol contains aspirin. If your dog is sensitive to aspirin, offer Imodium or Kaopectate instead.
