Feline Urinary Tract Infection Home Remedies

The urinary tract infection home remedies may be used instead of the aggressive antibiotic treatments that often have side effects. The at home remedies can be used only if the urinary tract infection is not advanced and the symptoms are not severe. For more severe cases, veterinary help is needed.

Symptoms Determining the Severity of UTI

The urinary tract infection (UTI) can be more or less severe and you need to look for symptoms to see if you can use home remedies or whether you will need to get veterinary help.

The symptoms indicating that the UTI is severe include:

  • Severe pain when urinating
  • Crying when urinating
  • Blood and impurities in the urine

If the cat doesn’t have these symptoms, at home remedies may be recommended.

Fluid for UTI Treatment

The easiest way to treat UTI is by increasing the amount of liquids the cat gets. The cat will drink more water instinctively, but you may also encourage your pet to drink more by offering various liquids including water (make sure it is fresh and filtered), freshly squeezed juices or even milk if your cat tolerates lactose.

Teas are particularly effective in clearing urinary infections, so choose a few teas that will also have antiseptic and soothing benefits such as chamomile or burdock root tea.

The total amount of liquids should be at least 700 ml, or the equivalent of 3 water glasses.

You may even switch to an all liquid diet, so that the kidneys have less workload and the urinary infection is more likely to clear.

Supplements for Immune System Support

Increasing the supplements in the cat’s diet will provide support for the immune system and this will facilitate the healing of the urinary tract infection.

Some supplements that are beneficial for the cat include omega fatty acids, which can be found in fish oil and tuna. You may also get these supplements from a pharmacy.

Vitamin C and E can also boost the immune system.

The B vitamin complex can be used if the cat is affected by stress.

Antibacterial Plants

There are a number of plants that have antibacterial properties including the burdock root, or the rosewood. Get essences from these plants from a health store and add 3 to 4 drops from thee solutions to the cat’s water.

Caring for the Cat

The urinary infection is often caused by a factor that stresses the cat. You will have to detect this factor and get rid of it, so that the cat will be more comfortable.

Make sure the cat gets plenty of rest and create a room that will be quiet and will be suitable for rest.

You will also have to clean the cat’s genital area, to make sure there are no bacteria that can travel in the urinary tract and aggravate the infection. Use a damp sponge and lukewarm water. You may add some burdock root extracts to the water.
