Herbal Allergy Relief for Pets

Allergies are difficult to manage, but there are a few herbal allergy remedies that may address the root of the problem and also reduce the symptoms. In addition, these remedies will not have any side effects, unlike other traditional treatments. Herbal remedies may be used both internally and externally.

Herbal Allergy Relief for Internal Use

The allergic reactions are caused by an adverse reaction of the immune system to the external factors. Herbal allergy remedies will address the root of the problem and will build up immunity, so that the pet won't develop allergic reactions in the future. There are a few herbs that help build up a stronger immune system, including:

  • Echinacea, a plant with well known immune system support properties
  • Dandelion extracts, which cleanse the liver and the pet's body, strengthening the immune system
  • Burdock root, having similar effects as dandelion extracts
  • Nettle extracts, which can act as a system cleanser and will reduce allergy skin symptoms

These ingredients may be administered daily as tablets or as drops, as indicated by the vet. Your pet may receive one or several of these herbal products.

Allergies are often treated with steroids, which are synthetic drugs that will have serious side effects, if used for a long time. Instead of synthetic steroids, the allergic pet may receive a natural ingredient that will have the effects of steroids without causing side effects. Licorice root extract should be added to the pet's diet, as the licorice root plants have a compound known as glycyrrhizin, which facilitates the production of natural corticosteroids. The natural corticosteroids will have an anti-inflammatory effect, reducing many of the allergy symptoms.

A natural medicine specialist will recommend these ingredients with internal use, in conjunction with topical treatment with other herbal extracts.

Herbal Allergy Relief for External Use

The allergies will often manifest on the dog through itchiness, and dry and flaky skin. Herbal extracts may be used topically to reduce these symptoms, while the internal remedies start being effective. For skin itchiness there are a few natural remedies that can be used:

  • Oat extract which can be applied directly on the skin or be the main ingredient in the shampoo or the rinse water of the pet
  • Yellow dock is recommended in shampoos or rinses
  • Aloe Vera can calm the skin and reduce flakiness
  • Calendula moisturizes the skin

These ingredients may be found in soaps, shampoos or different topical ointments that can be purchased in pet stores. You may also opt for shampoos and ointments prepared specially for your pet, ensuring these don't have additives and chemicals that can have negative effects on the animal's skin.

The herbal remedies will take a few weeks to be effective, so if the pet has severe allergies or anaphylactic shock, these ingredients won't be effective.
