Organic Raw Dog Food Diet Tips

There are many benefits to organic raw dog food, so it's worth getting some information on the diet for dogs.

The Benefits of Raw Diets

Dogs on raw organic diets have been cited to have many benefits, including but not limited to:

  • Better immune system
  • Quicker recovery
  • Less risks of being exposed to unhealthy components in dog food
  • More energy
  • No need for vitamin supplements
  • No artificial colorings or flavorings
  • No chemical preservatives

It is something that is rapidly becoming popular amongst dog-owners and many people swear by it. It is often considered to be healthier and safer than commercial dog food, which can often either contain ingredients that are not healthy or useful for your dog or it can lack the vitamins that your dog needs to be in the best condition possible.

Gradual Switch to the New Diet

It is never a good idea to completely change your dog's diet without warning. Especially when switching over to such a drastically different diet, take care to introduce it to your dog gradually. Start by giving your dog a little less commercial dog food and a little of the organic raw dog food mixed together, and work your way up until you have stopped the old diet completely and are entirely switched to the new one. This way, your dog will have a chance to get used to his new diet without risking a shock to its system. (If you are uncomfortable doing this based upon your own discretion, you can always consult your veterinarian.)

Expect and Monitor Common Short-Term Changes to Appearance

Don't be alarmed if you notice some changes in your dog's appearance as you begin to switch to the organic raw dog food. This is normal and will go away as your dog gets adjusted. Symptoms can include:

  • Shedding
  • Light discharge from eyes
  • Loose, soft stools
  • Wax in the ears
  • Slight rash

Of course, if symptoms become excessive and do not go away, you might want to consult your vet in case your dog has an allergy to something in his new food.

Understand What Nutrients Your Individual Dog Needs

Both of these options are available to you. Pet specialty stores often carry foods and treats that are both raw and organic or you can make your own.

If you choose to make your own, this can be a consuming process, though you will get the satisfaction of knowing exactly what your dog is eating. Be careful that you are not giving your dog anything that it is not supposed to have if you choose this route and be especially careful if you want to include raw meat in your dog's diet, as this can sometimes lead to illness.

As with any dog food diet, balance is extremely important. Your dog can have a good combination of meat along with even fruits and vegetables. It isn't wise to overload your dog on any one ingredient. Consult your veterinarian on any major dietary changes until you are more knowledgeable in what your dog can and can't have.
