Over-the-Counter Remedies for Dog Allergies

Dogs develop allergies from time to time so finding the best remedies for dog allergies is important. There are many over the counter products that a person can choose from to help their dog, but first you need to decide what type of allergy you are trying to treat. Some over the counter remedies work for multiple types of allergies, but some remedies are symptom specific.

Mild Shampoos or Dandruff Shampoos

Skin allergies can have many different causes. Skin allergies in dogs can develop because of the diet of the dog, which is often the case, but they can also develop due to external factors that inflame the dog's skin. If your dog has sensitive skin that seems to react to environmental causes then trying a dandruff shampoo or other mild shampoo may prove helpful. Using a mild shampoos instead of a tradition flea shampoo or other canine formula shampoo may help relieve the skin issues of your dog.

Benadryl or Other Antihistamines

Most allergies that dogs have are the response of histamines being activated due to the allergen. Antihistamines such as Benadryl can be very helpful in getting an allergy attack under control in a dog. Most dogs just need only need a small dose to control the symptoms they are experiences such as scratching and biting at their skin to stop an itch.

Cod Liver Oil and Flax Seed Oil

Some dogs develop dry skin as an allergic reaction to food or another environmental factor. Putting a tablespoon of cod liver oil or flax seed oil into a dog's food can greatly improve the skin of the dog, not to mention the dog's coat.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a great way to improve red spots on a dog's skin. The red spots can develop from any number of allergens, but aloe vera sooths the skin and is safe should the dog ingest it by licking at it after you apply the aloe Vera to their skin.

Hypo Allergenic Dog Biscuits

Some dogs who have allergic reactions to food cannot eat the average dog treat without suffering from a severe allergic reaction. There are now hypo allergenic dog biscuits that can allow you to give a treat to your dog even if they suffer from food allergies.

Cedar Dog Bed

Many dogs are allergic to fleas and one way to help prevent a flea infestation is to provide your dog with a dog bed that has cedar shavings as stuffing. Cedar naturally repels fleas. By reducing your dog's exposure to fleas you can reduce the allergic reactions that your dog will have from excessive flea bites.

There are many over the counter remedies that you can buy to help your dog with their allergic reactions. Identifying what is causing your dog's allergies can help you determine what the best over the counter remedy will be. Knowing the cause can also help you avoid the allergens in the first place which will help your dog overtime.
